Five Elements-841 viewsOriginal acrylic painting
Based on SEM image of a Ti-oxide formed on Waspaloy (2008-High Temperature Corrosion Calendar, INSTITUTE OF ENERGY RESEARCH, FZJ). The idea is to explain nature in the way of ancient philosophies. It refers to the fife archetypal classical elements: earth, water, air, fire, and aether (spirit) as the nano picture shows fife distinctive areas.
a. Spirit in its metaphysical meaning is part of all of us. If we call it a muse or an idea, it is always this fascinating feeling of something extraordinary. Philosophies also called it a quintessence, of which the cosmos and all celestial bodies are made. Therefore in the lower right corner we see a little part of cosmos, followed by one of the first representations of the moon by Galileo as well as the geocentric model of our universe. The ancient signs of spirit are also present on the rocks. A dove represents in the old Slavic believe transition of our soul after the death. The spirit of arts is represented by a pen, a brush, a painting knife, and music sheet.
b. Air with its fundamental importance to life is represented by the woman blowing the air. The vibrations are coming likewise from other instruments and can be detected by our ear or used by diverse engines. The same woman, Gaia, mother of earth is the link between air and next element.
c. Earth: mountains, rocks, plains, deserts. Over Apollo’s temple, where Gaia was worshiped, we move stepwise from the cold mountains to the hot desert. In the deep rocks, earth symbols, an old Aztec’s sculpture of "The Mother of Gods" - *Coatlicue* (gave birth to the moon, stars, and the god of the sun and war), and Chinese dragon are depicted. The plain grain field rounds up the missing kind of landscape.
d. Water. The morning dew is a source of water drops falling as rain on a happy man and the ground, is coming back by the wells, geysers or powerful rivers.
e. Fire dominates the middle of the picture. In its heart is the sun. Other nat

Drops of Knowledge-803 viewsOriginal acrylic painting
Inspired by SEM image of a Cr-Oxide formed on pure Chrome (2008-High Temperature Corrosion Calendar, INSTITUTE OF ENERGY RESEARCH, FZJ). Painting follows the most closely the nanostructure of the SEM-picture. The structure was painted using only three colors: black, white, and burnt umber. The drops stand for the different sciences. On top of the rock-shaped structure is a selection of many great minds. It isn’t possible to put all of the famous scientists in it; therefore, the only a representative ensemble is painted.

Periodic table-752 viewsOriginal acrylic painting
Inspired by the TEM microscopic picture of early ’ precipitations in the superalloy Waspaloy (Patrick Majerus, Master thesis, 1999). The ’ precipitations were then drawn as fruits of the trees, representing at the same time chemical elements, its symbol being indicated on each. Each element class (e.g.: nonmetals, noble gases) is painted in a different color. We finally see a nano-chemical garden.
